MCAA August 2022 Message
August greetings from the alumni council!
Hoping you are staying cool and enjoying the waning days of summer.
Over the past 18 months since the first elected council members of the new, independent MCAA took our seats, we’ve been working hard on building foundations–achieving federal nonprofit status, establishing connections between alumni using as many tools as we can, building our contact data, standing up committees, and drafting procedures and bylaws to govern our association. We do all this so that in the future we–you!--can do more: more gatherings where we can socialize and connect, more rigorous fundraising to put us on solid financial footing, more projects yet to be imagined. Now we’re coming to a transition: Late this fall we will ask association members to elect three new council members to replace those whose terms are up, and to determine by vote the ratification of bylaws to govern our association.
After much work and discussion, the council has endorsed a draft of bylaws for the MCAA. In the coming weeks, we will post the document to our website, with a Q&A mechanism, so association members can review and consider.
You may recall that the current council was elected all at once. For the sake of stability and continuity, it is important that the council rotation ultimately has staggered terms. To do this, we drew straws to determine each of the current council member’s term length. As a result, in October, we will call for nominations to fill three open seats, with new council members coming on in December. The rest of the current council will rotate off over the next two years. Please consider running for council! It’s a fulfilling and collaborative way to stay connected to the spirit of Marlboro and shape the future of the Association. There is plenty of work to be done, and, of course, lots of room for new ideas.
More information on these processes soon! Stay tuned, and remember, you need to be a member of the MCAA to receive a ballot and vote. Please join if you haven’t already. If you know an alum who isn’t as comfortable with email and digital technology, please consider helping them get connected.
In other news, Dan Toomey '79, of the MCAA Archives Committee, wanted to share that there are two Marlboro College stories on the Brattleboro Words Trail. One is the story of Hugh Mulligan ’48, and the second is of one of the college's first trustees, Robert Frost. The Brattleboro Historical Society did the research for the former; the Frost one was written and narrated by Dan Toomey, with William Edelglass the voice of the poet. Enjoy!
As always, be in touch with any questions, ideas, or just to say hello!
Sincerely,
