2022 MCAA Council Election Rules and Policies

The Alumni Council will abide by the following rules for the current 2022 election. These policies adhere to the procedures laid out in the proposed bylaws, with additional details added specific to this election.

  • The proposed bylaws will be on the ballot, with the option to vote to approve or reject them as the foundation of the organization.

    • A ‘Yes’ vote means you endorse these bylaws as a foundation, a first step in providing a structure to govern our Association. A ‘No’ vote will return the bylaws to the council for further revision. Voters may also choose to abstain from voting on this question.

    • Ratification of the bylaws will be carried by a simple majority of participating voters.

  • There are four (4) open council seats that will be filled through this election process. Three (3) of these seats are for three-year terms. One (1) seat is for a one-year term.

    • Council terms will begin in January 2023, with an orientation and transition period in December 2022.

    • Voters will select up to four candidates on the ballot. The three candidates who receive the highest number of votes will fill the three open seats with three-year terms. The candidate with the fourth highest number of votes will fill the fourth seat with a one-year term.

      • In the event of a tie, each candidate will fill one council seat assuming that there are open seats equal to the number of candidates in the tie. The one-year term will be assigned to a randomly selected candidate among the tied candidates.

    • In the event that there is a tie where two or more candidates receive the same number of votes and there are not enough open council seats for each candidate to fill a position, the open council position(s) will be filled through a random act, such as a number generator, under invited observation by the affected candidates.

      • If a random number generator is used, candidates will be pre-assigned a number in advance of the draw. The random number generator (RNG) will then be used to select one of the numbers representing a candidate. Refer to the process outlined below for additional information.

      • Once the winning candidates for four seats have been selected using the RNG process, the process will be repeated to randomly select which candidate will serve the one-year term.

  • The voting will be conducted online using the digital voting application Electionbuddy.com.

    • The voting window will open on November 12, 2022 and close on November 19, 2022 at 11:59 PM (Pacific time).

      • Anyone who ever attended Marlboro College in Marlboro, VT, or the Marlboro College Graduate Center, in Brattleboro, VT, for any length of time, and any good-faith friend of the college (including former faculty and staff) is eligible to vote in this election.

      • All Association members will automatically be sent a ballot. Eligible voters who are not yet Association members must join the Association by October 31 to receive a ballot and participate in this election.

    • Each person voting will receive one ballot. Each ballot is only meant for a specific individual and cannot be shared.

  • The results of the council election will be verified by the Alumni Council governance committee no later than December 1, 2022, and the results will be announced to the candidates and the Association on or before that date.
